Christchurch Arts Centre

The massive earthquake of last weekend in Christchurch is still very much in our minds right now. Here are some images from the area still cordoned off, taken at a happier time. The Christchurch Arts Centre in fact used to be the home of Canterbury University. When my wife and I attended that university the [...]

Kaikoura fur seal pups

A highlight of our trip to Kaikoura last weekend was the fur seals. There are hundreds of them, all down the Kaikoura Coast, but one spot in particular had hit the news the week before. A small stream at Ohau Point has provided a safe refuge and playground for the last five or six years for groups [...]

More albatross images

Off to Kaikoura last weekend with the Nelson Camera Club. Five of us went out with “Albatross Encounter” for a couple of hours. Here are a few examples, and I have posted some higher quality images on my wildlife gallery. (The first 10 images are from that trip.) We stopped not a huge distance offshore and [...]

Lincoln University campus

As spring approaches, I thought I would anticipate its arrival a little by posting some images from my old workplace: Lincoln University. The regular lunchtime walk made your heart lift.

The grounds are quite something at this time of year, especially when the blossoms emerge. From the look of the weather forecasts Christchurch may still be a way off, [...]

Silvereyes

Also known as Waxeyes, these little birds have been feeding just a few meters away from the end of our verandah. The feeder was set up to attract a tui, but instead a couple of dozen of these guys squabble around it all day. Here are some character studies:

The wings lowered and fluttering, with the [...]

Blackball

Not far from Greymouth is the little mining village of Blackball, famous for its hotel called the “Blackball Hilton”.

More correctly, after an IP dispute with some other hotel chain also laying claim to part of that name, it’s name is now “formerly the Blackball Hilton”.

Blackball is a fascinating place with quite a history. It still [...]

Brunner mine

Just a few minutes from Greymouth, alongside the Grey River, the site of the Brunner Coalmine is clearly visible from the main road to Reefton. This heritage area has seen a great deal of restoration effort in the last two years. Access is via an impressive bridge, now in its fifth or sixth reincarnation after [...]

Speedway incidents

A recent camera club competition had the theme “photojournalism”. I entered this image, taken on my very first visit to Moore Park.

Afterwards I was quizzed by some of the members, wanting to know the outcome of this rather horrifying collision. Unfortunately it wasn’t good, I think there were some broken limbs. Here’s what happened next:

That corner, [...]

Christchurch Art Gallery

Last year I spent several months commuting, spending the working week in Christchurch and returning to Nelson at weekends. I stayed just across the road from the art gallery, so was able to spend quite a few evenings there. It’s an interesting building, difficult to do justice to in photographs. Here is a more creative example, [...]

Killer slugs

The speaker at my Rotary club meeting last week had a remarkable story to tell, one in which I had an intense personal interest. Paul McNabb of the Cawthron Institute spoke about the discovery of New Zealand’s most poisonous animal, an inconspicuous little sea slug.

The story began about one year ago when a whole series [...]
