15 Jan 2010Fur seals can be found all around the New Zealand coast. These shots are from the Otago Peninsula, taken rather late in the evening.

It looked a very peaceful scene, but looks can be deceptive. The previous evening, a New Zealand sea lion had swept through the kelp on a surging wave, leapt out of the water and then retreated to the surf with one of these pups in its jaws. It then proceeded to enjoy its meal, to the horror of the onlookers.
